If you notice windows.old folder in one of your disk partitions and are wondering what is it then this post will help you to know more about it. And also how to remove it completely.
If you upgraded to windows 8 from other operating system without formatting the partition then all the files of previous operating system are stored inside windows.old folder.
And since it occupies the hard disk space in Gigabytes, you might wish to delete it. But lets not just go ahead and delete it all the way. You can do it safely by using disk cleanup utility.
Open the Start Page. Search for “Disk Cleanup“. Choose Settings. And then select ‘Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files‘.
- You will now be asked, Which drive you want to clean up? Choose the partition in which windows.old folder is present.
- And click Ok.
- Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete.
- And then click Ok.
- Now hit delete files option. And you’re done.
Note that – Once previous windows installation has been deleted, its not possible to recover those files.
