How to Backup / Restore Registry

If you are not a geek, then first of all let me start with What is Registry in Windows. Registry is simply a database of all the system configurations and settings. It stores the information of everything on your computer in a hierarchical manner.

Why to Backup Registry?

When you install new applications or perform any operations on your operating system then all these changes take place inside the Windows Registry. Also you need to modify Windows Registry for tweaking your Computer.

So if at any chance you mess up with the Windows Registry, it can cause serious problems. And to be on a safer side you should always backup the Windows Registry before messing up with it.

On you will find many Windows hacks and tweaks which will suggest you to modify your Windows Registry. And it is very important to have a Backup of Windows Registry.

So in case anything goes wrong, you can just restore the Backup. So now lets see how to backup Registry.

#1 Open Registry Editor

In Windows XP:

  1. Open Start Menu
  2. Go in Run
  3. Type regedit
  4. Hit enter

In Windows 7:

  1. Open Start Menu
  2. Type regedit
  3. Hit Enter.

In Windows 8:

  1. Open Start Page
  2. Type regedit
  3. Hit Enter.

#2 Exporting the Registry

  1. Click on File
  2. Click on Export
  3. Save this file somewhere on your Computer.

That’s it your entire Registry has been saved. That means a backup is created. Now the question is how to restore the backup?

How to Restore the Backup?

To restore, you can just double click on the saved file and click Ok. And your backup will be restored.
