Hiding files and folders using command prompt

Previously i wrote about hiding files and folders in windows using two methods. One was the beginners way while the other was a bit difficult one.  The beginners way method was way too simple and almost every computer user know it. While the other one was way too complicated for a layman.

Now in this article, I am going to share a simple method to hide files and folders using command prompt. First lets have a look at the topics summary :

Task: Hiding files and folders using command prompt.
Difficulty: Easy+
Time: 5 minutes or less.

Suppose if you want to hide a folder named “Omkar” on your D drive.
( The path to Omkar folder is “D:Omkar” ).

To hide this folder, just open your command prompt. And Type the code given below and press enter.

attrib +s +h D:Omkar

To unhide this folder, type the code given below and press enter.

attrib -s -h D:Omkar

I don’t know if you noticed it or not. But this is the same code which was shared previously on this blog in an article named “How to create a password protected folder without any software“. That article was a little advanced and would take about 10-15 minutes for a beginner level user.
I just made it easier so even a layman could do it.

Since both these articles uses the same principle of ‘attrib’. They both have similar drawbacks.

  • One is that anyone who knows the folder name can access the folder by typing the directory in the address bar.
  • Second is that the folder contents are visible in windows search.
  • For example, if there is a file named abcd.txt in your hidden folder. And if you search for this file using windows search. Then you will get this file in the search results.

The solution to these drawbacks is just to change the folder name as well as filename to something abstract.

In my opinion these are not the best methods to hide files or folders on a secure level. If you are hiding any random file for limited time duration then these can be very useful. But if you are planning to hide the file on a very secure level then you might consider using a third party software. I would recommend a software named folder guard. Its quite good and provides encryption options as well.

Hiding files in windows – Beginners way

In this post i am going to share the easy way of hiding files and folders on your windows computer.

Task: Hiding files and folders in using ‘hidden attribute’.
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 5 minutes.

This post is helpful if you want to hide any particular file or folder on your computer just for time sake.

I would not recommend using this method to hide any important data because any technically sophisticated user can find out the hidden files or folders easily.

If you really want to hide an important file then i would suggest you to use any third party software which will lock your files safely by encrypting them.

Anyway, coming back to the topic. Lets see how to hide files – the easy way.

There are three points to consider in this procedure :

1) Applying ‘hidden attribute’ – To hide a file or folder.
2) Show hidden files or folders (To display files &  folders with hidden attribute).
3) Hide hidden files or folders (To hide files & folders with hidden attribute).

1) Applying Hidden Attribute

  • First let us see how to apply the hidden attribute to a file or a folder.
  • Suppose if you want to hide a folder named ‘Hello’. Then Right click on the folder > Click Properties.

  • The properties window will show up. Here you can see Attributes option contains ‘read only’ and ‘hidden’ attribute. Just check the hidden attribute and click on OK.
  • And once you click OK your ‘Hello’ folder will disappear.

Note: Your folder has disappeared because it is marked as ‘hidden’. And the default system settings is “hide the files/folders having hidden attribute”.

2.1) Show/Hide hidden files or folders – Windows XP

To show or hide hidden files or folders you have to access folder options in windows.

  • Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder options.

  • Then in folder options click on view tab.

  • Now see the option “Hidden files and folders”
  • You can either select “Do not show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files and folders”
  • If you select “Do not show hidden files and folders” then files and folders having “hidden” attribute will not be shown.
  • And if you select “Show hidden files and folders” then files and folders having “hidden” attribute will be shown.

2.2) Show/Hide hidden files or folders – Windows 7

  • Go to My Computer > Organize > Folder and search options.

  • Then click on view tab.

Facebook – Pay to promote a post, Interested?

Facebook itself estimates that your content is viewed by only 16% of your friends or fans !!

There was a time when we would post something on facebook and were sure that it would show up on almost everyone’s news feed. But today times have changed. Does your post reaches out to everyone today? I don’t think so. In fact facebook itself estimates that your content is viewed by only 16% of your friends or fans.

This can happen due to many reasons such as users may not be logged in when you post something. And thus your post gets lost or lets say shuffled by others posts or likes. And now they are introducing the Facebook Promote. Lets see what is it !

We all must have noticed the ‘Introducing Facebook posts’ option coming up on all of your recent posts. The screen below is what shows up when you click on Promote button.

Don’t fall for it yet. You can see a small link over there? Yes the ‘terms apply’ link. Make sure you read it if you are really interested in promoting your posts.

Promoted posts are similar to display ads. You post, you pay, and facebook promises to uh.. Let me quote :

When you promote a post, it will be shown in the news feeds of more of the people who like your Page than you would reach normally. Friends of the people who have interacted with your post will also be more likely to see the story in their news feeds for up to 3 days from when the post was first created.

I don’t know why would someone promote their posts. I am not trying to be skeptical but i doubt them. Are they ensuring you that your posts are shown to limited people and thus encouraging you to use Facebook promote?

If you are having a facebook page then you might consider promoting it. Because it represents something in a way. But few questions come in my mind. If you promote, how many people are you bound to reach? 10 ? 500 ? Well silly me to do the maths. Because facebook’s engineers have already done their maths. As you can see in the image below.

You can see that they have already given you the estimated reach depending upon the number of likes on your page.

My personal opinion :

If you ask my personal opinion on facebook promote. I would recommend this to marketing people for promoting their sales or products over time. But using facebook promote to promote any random post is totally useless and waste of money.

I haven’t tried it out. But if anyone of you has ever tried out facebook promote, then feel free to share your experience as a comment below.
